It could mean less hassle when you arrive at your hotel. You could skip the front desk and just walk to your room with your phone in your hand.
Travel tech tracker Tnooz.com today tells us that a firm called OpenWays is working on the concept, although it’s not in hotels yet.
The system works by sending “a digitally encrypted audio bleep to the door locking mechanism from any smartphone,” the story says. Guests would be given a code when they check in that works with a downloadable app on their smartphone, whether an iPhone, Blackerry or Android, the story says.
Another benefit: You no longer lose your room key, so it could help with security, the story notes.
At this point, the system remains a concept. The article says that hotels are “expected” to install the system but not one is identified.
A couple of weeks ago, Hotel Check-In also wrote about Starwood’s newfangled key experiment that uses a special keycard – as opposed to your cell phone – that uses RFID technology to unlock the door without first stopping by the front desk.
